Alpine cows are to remain without bells

Автор: 31.08.2015 | Germany, nature
The tinkle of cows’ bells at a distance is one of the most recognizable sounds in Alps. However, soon it may become only reminiscence of the past, at least, in German Allgäu.

Protectors of the zoos of Germany call for prohibition of traditional bells worn on the cows’ neck. As they have said, the stated objects are too heavy and make animals suffer. Instead of that, the representatives of community of animal rights protection «German Animal Welfare Society» offer to let cows wear GPS-appliance.

Traditionally farmers allow cows to be at grass on Alpine meadows, and bells are used to define their location. Despite the fact that the sound of such bells is usually associated with Switzerland, Bavarian region Allgäu also has the similar tradition.

Nevertheless, recently there are more complaints about cows’ bells which seem to be harmless at first sight. The court in Switzerland and Germany has already made farmers put them off in night time not to awaken neighbors with the twinkle.

German human rights defenders are sure that animals should not suffer because of traditions. However, the requirements of activists protecting the rights of animals are wrong-footed in the eyes of farmers and representatives of travel agencies. The first ones do not want to deny ancient habit, while the others do not wish to deprive the tourists on the possibility to listen to this sound in Alps, as Telegraph reports.
