National Day in Sweden

Автор: 06.06.2014 | holiday, history, Sweden
On June 6 Sweden celebrates two public holidays: National Day dedicated to the first king of the country, and Flag Day.

The event roots deep into 1521 when Gustav Vasa I headed a popular revolt against Denmark, and consequently was elected the first king of Sweden. Over time the Swedes decided to immortalize the memory of the monarch by proclaiming this day as a national holiday.

And since 1916 the 6th day of June is also celebrated as Flag Day. The exact age of blue banner with a yellow cross is unknown, though the experts attribute its oldest image to the 16th century.

Traditionally the main events take place at the Olympic Stadium in Stockholm. Every year the King and the Queen of Sweden participate in a ceremony at Skansen, Stockholm’s open-air museum, where the Swedish flag is run up the mast, and children in national costumes present the royal couple with bouquets of summer flowers.

This day special ceremony welcoming new Swedish citizens is held in the City Hall.
