Independence Day of Zambia is celebrated annually on the 24-th of October. This holiday is dedicated to the anniversary of Zambia’s independence of the Great Britain in 1964.

Till the independence, since 1924 Zambia had been the colony of British crown and took a name of Northern Rhodesia.

After getting independence the first president of Zambia became Kenneth Kaunda. He developed the system of education, led the politics of economic nationalization, dealt with the building of railway that connected Zambia and Tanzania. At first, the country experienced the improvement of economic situation, however, approximately from the middle of 1970s economic condition of Zambia was getting worse, and nowadays the country appeared in the number of the poorest states in the world.

Despite the poor economic situation, the celebration of the Independence Day of Zambia is going in a colorful manner. The population has fun at different festive events; the cities are decorated with the national flags. The representatives of the authorities, in their turn, are going to the official ceremony in Independence Day so as to respect the memory of those who gave their lives in the fight for the freedom of Zambia.
