Independence Day of Antigua and Barbuda

Annually on the 1-st of November the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda from the small island state in Caribbean sea celebrate the main national holiday, Independence Day. This day in 1981 the independence of Antigua and Barbuda of the Great Britain was announced.

The first citizens of the islands were Indians from the Arawak tribe. In XIII century they were muscled out by the fierce tribes of Carribeans. In 1493 these islands were open by Christopher Columbus in the course of his second trip.

In 1632 the islands went into possession of the Great Britain. The plantations were organized at Antigua. The black people who had been intended to be slaves were taken there from Africa. The slavery at Antigua was cancelled in 1834. From 1958 till 1962 these islands along with other islands of the group of Lesser Antilles joined the West-Indian federation.

In 1967 Antigua was given with the status of associated state with the Great Britain. It included such three islands as Antigua, Barbuda and small desert island Redonda.

On the 1-st of November 1981 the independence of state Antigua and Barbuda was announced. The anniversary of independence is celebrated at the islands as the national holiday. The country is included in the community of nations. That’s why the official head of the country is the British monarch.
