In Iceland the name Andrej is forbidden

Автор: 05.02.2018 | Iceland
The popular among Slavic nations Greek name Andrej did not appear in the list of names which are allowed to be given to the children in Iceland.

The name Andrej did not come to Icelandic national register of names that are permitted to be given to the children born within the territory of the country.

In Iceland the names for newly born children should be chosen only from the list approved by the national committee. It creates difficulties for those foreigners who moved to live in the country. The exceptions are possible only in case if both the father and mother of the child born in Iceland are not the citizens of the country.

The name Andrej was not accepted because its spelling does not follow the rules of Icelandic language. As it was stated in the conclusion of the committee, to transmit the appropriate sounds in Icelandic language it had to choose the spelling Andrei or Andrey. It is likely that verily in such a view it will be placed in the register which has been already full of five other variants of the name Andrej used by the representatives of different nations, such as Andrean, Andreas, Ande, Andres, and Icelandic Andri.
