On the 26-th of April, 2018 at 11:00 in the media center of the GDIP, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan in Ukraine Faizullo Holboboev will organize a briefing in connection with the adoption of the UNGA Resolution "International Decade for Action" Water for Sustainable Development "2018-2028".

On December 21, 2016, the UN General Assembly approved resolution A / RES / 71/222, entitled "International Decade for Action" Water for Sustainable Development ", 2018-2028, which was supported by all UN member countries.

The initiative to declare the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development" was first put forward by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon during the 7th World Water Forum in April 2015 in the Republic of Korea.

In accordance with this resolution, the period 2018-2028 is declared the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development", which began on the 22-nd of March 2018 and ends on the 22-nd of March 2028 (22 March - World Water Day).

Giving a speech at the Water Forum, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan stressed that "... today's global challenges and threats, including financial and economic crises, population growth, climate change, rapid hydrometeorological events, water shortages and, as a result, an increasing level of poverty, the growth of infectious diseases, child and maternal mortality, still require the mobilization of our efforts and the adoption of appropriate measures in this area".

In this regard, the Head of State proposed that the new Decade be prepared to replace the concluding International Decade for Action "Water for Life, 2005-2015", which will become an essential platform and will promote coordination and encouragement of all efforts to address issues and problems related to water resources.

In addition, the new Decade is designed to continue the unfinished business of the International Decade for Action "Water for Life, 2005-2015", enriching it with new measures and efforts to achieve the goals of sustainable development.

It is widely known that the initiative to proclaim the International Decade for Action "Water for Life, 2005-2015" was also put forward by the President of the country in 2003. That year, at the initiative of Tajikistan, the UN General Assembly approved a resolution, according to which the period from 2005 to 2015 was proclaimed the International Decade for Action "Water for Life". Subsequently, within the framework of this decade, the initiative of Tajikistan to declare 2013 the International Year of Water Cooperation was also approved.

In the framework of the International Decade for Action "Water for Life" and in accordance with the resolutions of the UN General Assembly, three interactive dialogues of the General Assembly were held in 2010, 2013 and 2015.

In addition, the Government of the country, in cooperation with the UN, prepared and conducted the following important events in Dushanbe:
- Medium-term comprehensive review of the implementation of the International Decade for Action "Water for Life" in June 2010;
-International High-Level Conference on Water Cooperation
in August 2013;
-International high-level conference on the results of the implementation of the International Decade for Action "Water for Life" in June 2015.
In July 2016, the UN Secretary-General published a report on the implementation of the International Decade for Action "Water for Life", 2005-2015 (A / 71/260).

In accordance with this report, "the Decade was marked by many achievements. No other ten-year period in the history of the United Nations can compare with it by the number of events and results related to water resources".

Along with this, the Decade, as noted in the report, "has exposed shortcomings and problem points, slowing progress towards the achievement of goals and targets for water resources. There are numerous restrictions in terms of human, institutional and financial resources".

According to the resolution of the UN General Assembly, the goals of the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development" include increased attention to:
- Sustainable development and integrated management of water resources to achieve socio-economic and environmental objectives;
- implementation and promotion of relevant programs and projects;
- Expanding cooperation and partnerships at all levels to promote the implementation of internationally agreed goals and targets related to water resources, including the goals of sustainable development.

Moreover, the resolution emphasizes the importance of promoting effective water management at all levels, taking into account the interlinkages between water resources, food, energy and the environment.

In addition to that, the resolution defines the following actions as additional goals for the Decade:
- improving the mechanisms for the formation and dissemination of knowledge, facilitating access to knowledge and sharing information on best practices, obtaining new information related to the objectives of sustainable development related to water resources;
-creation of networks and assistance in forming partnerships and activities of other stakeholders in the implementation of goals and objectives related to water resources;
- Strengthening of communication activities at various levels in the interests of realizing the goals related to water resources.

This resolution invites the Secretary-General of the United Nations to take the necessary steps to plan and organize activities for the Decade at the global, regional and country levels with the support of the UN-Water interagency mechanism.

At the same time, the results of the implementation of the International Decade for Action "Water for Life, 2005-2015", the activities of the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and the work of the High-level Panel on Water established by the UN Secretary-General and the President of the World Bank should be taken into account.

On the 22-nd of March, in New York, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, at the launch of the International Decade for Action, "Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028", spoke at a joint event of Tajikistan with active countries, entitled "Priority Actions in the Sphere of Water Resources, Climate Change, threats of natural disasters within the framework of the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028".

To mobilize the efforts of governments, UN agencies, international and non-governmental organizations, as well as other stakeholders at all levels, to effectively implement the water-related Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the goals and objectives of the International Water Decade, 20-22 June 2018 in Dushanbe The Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, in cooperation with the UN and other partners, is planning to hold the International High-Level Conference on the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development" on development ", 2018-2028.
