The Ambassador of Tajikistan organized briefing on UN resolution “Water for sustainable development”
The briefing focused on pressing issues on resolution A / RES / 71/222, which was endorsed on the 21-st of December, 2016 by the UN General Assembly, entitled "International Decade for Action" Water for Sustainable Development ", 2018-2028, members of the UN.
The initiative to declare the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development" was first put forward by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon during the 7th World Water Forum in April 2015 in the Republic of Korea.
In accordance with this resolution, the period 2018-2028 is declared the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development", which began on the 22-nd of March 2018 and ends on the 22-nd of March 2028 (22-nd of March is World Water Day).
Speaking at the Water Forum, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan stressed that "... today's global challenges and threats, including financial and economic crises, population growth, climate change, rapid hydrometeorological events, water shortages and, as a result, an increasing level of poverty, the growth of infectious diseases, child and maternal mortality, still require the mobilization of our efforts and the adoption of appropriate measures in this area”.
According to the resolution of the UN General Assembly, the goals of the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development" include increased attention to:
- Sustainable development and integrated management of water resources to achieve socio-economic and environmental objectives;
- implementation and promotion of relevant programs and projects;
- Expanding cooperation and partnerships at all levels to promote the implementation of internationally agreed goals and targets related to water resources, including the goals of sustainable development.
In addition, the resolution emphasizes the importance of promoting effective water management at all levels, taking into account the interlinkages between water resources, food, energy and the environment.
