Cat Day in Japan

Автор: 22.02.2018 | Japan
Let’s start with the fact that word «two» sounds as «nie», translating into Japanese. In some cases, one of which became a reason for launching of non-official Cat Day, «two» can be pronounced playfully – «nyan». We may only guess whether it is accidentally or no, however, the Japanese consider that the cat news just as «nyan-nyan-nyan». Then everything is going simply and logically. «Nyan-nyan-nyan» means «two-two-two», and «two-two-two», correspondingly, signifies twenty-second day of the second month.

On the 22-nd of February producers of feed for cats and other domestic animals decided to celebrate Cat Day and began promulgating this auction actively.

In 1987, the executive committee of Cat Day was created. Since then, activists call upon everybody to know more about cats, their habits, and favorite delicacies. It is thought that cats came to Japan from China approximately in the 6-th century AD (in Nara period).

Ancient ancestors of current cats were taken at ships «on service» so as to keep mice away from the sacred Buddhist books transmitted from China to Japan. In Heian period (794-1192) cats were depicted in the pictures and in the books.

Afterwards, over the course of history, cats settled throughout Japan and evolved, as the result the famous breed of Japanese cat – Japanese Bobtail appeared – with round snout and short tail.
