Necktie Holiday

Автор: 18.10.2014
Non-official holiday called as Cravat Day, or Necktie Day, is celebrated annually on the 18-th of October. The motherland of this holiday is Croatia, as in that same country the prototype of the modern tie appeared.

It is considered that the blueprint of ties were colourful silk neckerchieves which were worn by Croatian hirelings in France in the epoch of Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelie. Parisians were interested in this unusual pattern of Croatian military suit.

The neckerchieves steadily entered the wardrobe of French people and received the name cravate (originated from French «croat»). In additional, this root migrated into other European languages (thus, in Ukrainian language it is called «cravatka»).

By the middle of XIX century, borrowed neckerchieves reminded modern ties. They gained currency in England, where wearing of ties was proclaimed as high art, and gentlemen knew almost hundred ways to tie necktie. In virtue to English people ties became popular all over the Earth.

It is not surprise that Necktie Day has the greatest meaning for citizens of three countries – Croatia, France, and Great Britain, because the classic male accessory appeared there.
