Icelandic Language Day is celebrated every year on November 16th. This national holiday in Iceland is dedicated to the national language of the country, this date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Jónas Hallgrímsson - Icelandic poet and writer, member of the Icelandic independence movement from Denmark.

Icelandic Language Day was suggested to celebrate in 1995. Icelandic Ministry of Culture supported this idea, so next 1996 year the festival was first marked. The purpose of the Icelandic Language Day
