Day of the Colombian woman

On November 14 Colombian Women's Day is observed. This holiday was established on November 8, 1967 by the decision of the Colombian Congress.
It is dedicated to the memory of the national heroine of the country - Policarpa Salavarrieta. Date of holiday was chosen to coincide with her death anniversary, Salavarrieta died in 1817.
Salavarrieta is known as the heroine of the independence movement in Colombia. During the war for independence, she strongly supported the guerrilla forces, conducted reconnaissance, recruited groups of volunteers. In November 1917, she and other revolutionaries were captured by Spanish Royalists.
Policarpa Salavarrieta was sentenced to execution by firing squad, set for November 14, 1817. But the Colombian people kept in memory the exploits of a young woman, and in the middle of the XX century it was decided to honour her with Day of the Colombian Woman.
