Автор: 26.03.2015 | Hawai
On March 26th in Hawaii one of the biggest holidays is celebrated - the birthday of Prince John Kūhiō. U.S. Congressman, who managed to protect the rights of the local population, became a national hero for the islanders. Kuhio was the only person who persuaded the American authorities to allow native inhabitants legally build houses on their territory.

The memory of the Hawaiians’ best-loved leader has been honoured since 1949. This day is a state holiday, traditionally the island of Oahu hosts a parade, its residents arrange festivals, canoe races, games, dancing and lay flowers at the monuments of the Prince.

Also the Prince Kūhiō Day in Hawaiian is a start of the famous luau feast when guests are offered exotic dishes: poi , sweet potatoes, salmon lomilomi. The main delicacy of celebration is a baked pig cooked in a special underground oven called imu.
