First Eurovision Song Contest

On May 24, 1956 the First Eurovision Song Contest was held in the Swiss town of Lugano.

The contest was first known as the Eurovision Grand Prix and was inspired by the Italian Sanremo Festival.

It was organized by the members of the European Broadcasting Union conceived to create a large and spectacular show that will work for the benefit of cultural unification of the continent. Proposal to hold an international music competition came from the General Director of the Swiss television Marcel Bezençon.

In the first musical contest seven participating countries were represented with two songs each. The winner was the Swiss singer Lys Assia with the song Refrain.

The number of countries wishing to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest increased from year to year. In this year's song contest which was held from 6 to 10 May in Denmark, 28 countries participated, the winner was singer from Austria Conchita Wurst.
