Independence day of Lebanon

Today in Lebanon it is celebrated one of the most prominent national holidays – Independence day.

It became festive and simultaneously memorable date in honor of the country liberation from French mandate having been implemented in Lebanese lands for more than 23 years. In 1920 in Italian San Remo, the French and British conference had taken place, the result of which was depicted as the French mandate.

It had been spread within the territory of modern Lebanon, Syria, and Turkish province Hatay, the empowerment of France was established by the League of Nations in September, 1923.

On the 8-th of November, 1943, Lebanese parliament expelled from the Constitution of Lebanon the articles limiting the sovereignty of country. In reply French authorities arrested the president Bechara El Khouri and Prime Minister Riad as-Solh, afterwards they dissolved parliament and announced the removal of Constitution activity. As the result throughout the country the demonstrations started together with weaponed skirmish with colonial government started.

On the 22-nd November, 1943 French authorities intended to reestablish legal government of Lebanon. Officially, French mandate had been acted to 1943, however, French troops remained in Syria and Lebanon to 1946. The celebrations in honor of Independence day are held all over the country, but the most overcrowded streets could be observed in capital of country Beirut during the great military parade. The outdoors is bustling, after the end of parade hundreds of red, green, and white balloons are taking rise in the sky. In the evening the festive fireworks, dancing shows, and concert performances of entertainers and soldiers are held.
