Republic Day in Malta
From olden times Malta has attracted heightened attention of conquerors due to its profitable location in the center of marine routes leading from Europe to Africa and Asia. In 1530 it was delivered possession of the island upon the commencement of spiritual and knightly order which was renamed in Maltese order.
In 1798 Malta was occupied by Napoleon Bonaparte who abolished the power of Maltese order, and in 1800 Valetta – the capital of Malta – was taken by English people. In 1814 Paris Peace Treaty was made according to the conditions of which Malta finally withdrew to Great Britain and became its colony and naval base.
In 1921 Malta was given with self-regulation, and in 1964 – independence as the kingdom of Commonwealth. The head of state in Malta was represented by Queen Elizabeth II (who bore a title of the queen of Malta). However, in 1974 Constitution was reconsidered, on the 13-th of December republic was announced, and new regulator became President Anthony Mamo.
