On May 18 in Berlin starts the Velothon Berlin – the second largest bicycle race in Europe.

Since its premiere in May 2008 the competition has traditionally attracted thousands of those wishing to try their hand and numerous spectators. The race starts at the Brandenburg Gate, it is attended by professional cyclists as well as those for whom biking is just a hobby. Therefore, distances differ: 184.6 km, 120 km and 60 km.

As a part of a cycling festival the streets of Berlin host an ambitious program consisting of various recreational activities for the whole family and traditional fairs.

About 12 thousand cyclists started last year race, along the route they were supported by more than 300 thousand Berliners and city guests.

Unfortunately, a marathon did not go without incident. 73-year-old pensioner and cyclist accidently met at one point on the rout. Being unable to avoid a collision at a speed of 50 km/h, he hit down the poor woman. As a result, except for wounded Frau, were injured ten athletes who got into the massed fall, they had to stop competing for prizes.

The winner in the professional race Garmin Velothon Berlin in 2013 was a 25-year-old German Marcel Kittel.
