Independence Day in Afghanistan

19.08.2016
On the 19-th of August, the citizens of Afghanistan celebrate national holiday, Independence Day. This day is coincided with the date of announcement of independence of Afghanistan on Great Britain in 1919.

At the beginning of XIX century Afghanistan became the space of political interests of two states such as British and Russian Empires. The power in Afghanistan meant supremacy in the countries of Central Asia that is why afterwards historians called this confrontation as “Great game’ The peaceful citizens of Afghanistan endured all the hardship of political games when they were involved into three colonial wars. The first battles happened from 1838 to 1942, while the second war occurred from 1878 to 1880, and, finally, the third attempt of invasion is dated by 1919.

Great Britain failed in the Third Anglo-Afghan war as the result of what the state had to approve the independence of Afghanistan and the appropriate documents were signed.

This year the celebration of the 97-th anniversary of Independence Day in Afghanistan was blighted with the military intervention of Taliban movement considered as the representatives of Islamic religious and political direction. At the East of Afghanistan, in Asadabad city located in Kunar Province the members of Taliban launched three rackets into the participants of the holiday. As the result, three people died and 49 people got injured.
