Women’s Equality Day in USA

26.08.2016
Annually, on the 26-th of August in USA citizens celebrate Women’s Equality Day. This holiday established by American politician and community leader Bella Abzug appeared in 1971.

The daughter of Russian emigrants with Jewish roots left traces in the history of Americans with her incredibly active movement. Bella Abzug became the first Jewess who entered the Congress of the USA (it occurred in 1970). In 1971, Bella joined feminist campaign of Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan who collaborated to launch National Women’s Political Caucus reaching the honorable position of women in the House of Representatives.

Bella Abzug dedicated her political life to the investigation of problems which women faced and the ways of their solving. Particularly, she was not frightened to speak from the platform mentioning that in many countries women had to be engaged in prostitution, get married in early age or despite their own desire because the law did not protect them properly.

Concerning the equality of women and men verily in the USA, in this country people firstly spoke about the gender problems in 1848, during Seneca Falls Woman's Rights Convention. It was here where for the first time the words that sound now with evident clearance had been articulated: ‘All the men and women are created equal. The creator has provided them with the definite inalienable rights’. However, not one decade had to have lasted before the initiative of enthusiasts took effect. Particularly, in 1920 nineteen amendments to the United States Constitution were taken also known under the name Woman Suffrage Amendment. Consequently, the women received the right to participate in the elections and be voted upon the executive authorities.
