Day of proclamation of restoration of independence of Latvia

The proclamation was followed by a struggle for independence, which ended in victory. In August 1920, a treaty was signed on a truce with the RSFSR, Russia was the first country in the world to recognize the existence of an independent Latvian state. In 1921, the independence of the Republic of Latvia was recognized as the winner countries in the First World War, a few months later Latvia was admitted to the League of Nations. However, the period of independence lasted for a relatively short time. In 1939 the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was signed, according to which Latvia entered the sphere of interests of the Soviet Union. In 1940, the Baltic countries, including Latvia, were annexed to the USSR. In 1987, with the beginning of perestroika, a mass performance began in Riga and other Baltic capitals, 1988 was marked by the appearance of the first perestroika movements. Finally, on the 4-th of May, 1990, the newly elected Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR adopted the Declaration on the Restoration of the Independence of the Republic of Latvia. The anniversary of the proclamation of the declaration is a national holiday. Annually on this day in Riga there is a ceremony of laying flowers at the Freedom Monument, a festive parade, concerts and other events, and the celebration with a salute ends.
