Flag Day Observed in Argentina
20.06.2014
Today the Argentines celebrate the Day of the National Flag.
This date was proclaimed in memory of the banner creator Manuel Belgrano. Today in his hometown of Rosario, where a huge monument to Argentine flag was installed, large-scale events are arranged dedicated to this significant day.
Argentine flag was adopted in February 1812, it took over the colours of blue and white rosettes used by the Argentines during the independence war. Blue and white colours on the flag represent, respectively, the sky and snow of the Andes. In 1818 image of the sun was added to the flag. This is the sun of May, a national symbol of Argentina, which resembles appearance of the sun on a cloudy sky on May 25, 1810 when the first massive popular demonstrations in support of independence was held.
