Annually on the 17-th of September, in United States of America it is celebrated the national holiday – Day of Constitution, also known as Day of citizenship.
It is dedicated to the establishment of Constitution in USA in 1787, and to those people who have received American citizenship.
The date of holiday was chosen in honor of acceptance of Constitution of USA at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, on the 17-th of September, 1787. The document was ratified by all states (at that moment there were 13 of them) several months later, on the 21-st of June, 1788. Constitution of USA is considered as the first constitution in modern mean of this word.
Firstly Day of Constitution was celebrated in Iowa in 1911. In 1939, it was the first time when the idea of celebration of day «I am an American Day» sounded. After several changes of date, in 1952 the date 17-th of September was chosen, and name of holiday was replaced with Day of citizenship. In 2001 the holiday was renamed into Day of Constitution and citizenship, and finally in 2004 – into Day of Constitution.
If the 17-th of September falls to the weekend, celebration of Day of Constitution in schools and other establishments is moved to the coming business day. Despite the status of national holiday, it is not holiday for civil servants.
