Independence Day of Armenia

Armenia announced its independence twice. The first time when Armenia became an independent state was the 28-th of May, 1918, after dissolution of Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic. This date is celebrated in Armenia at the domestic level - not as Independence Day but as Day of the First Republic.
The first Armenian republic had been existing for a short time: in 1992 it joint Soviet Union as one of three republics compiling Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic. In 1936 in Soviet Union new constitution was accepted, according to which Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia were merged in Soviet Union as independent Soviet republics. In such a way in 1937 Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic appeared.
After August Putsch of 1990 the issue of separation of Armenia from Soviet Union was discussed. Armenia announced its independence from Soviet Union on the 23-rd of August, 1990, but complete independence was claimed only on the 21-st of September, 1991. This day is celebrated in Armenia as Independence Day. However, officially Armenia received independence in December, 1991 after irreversible collapse of Soviet Union.
