National travel agency of Great Britain VisitBritain has launched campaign in the frames of which it is planned to give additional Chinese names to 101 landmarks, “The Beatles” band, and actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
Campaign ‘Great names of Great Britain” has been launched with the purpose to increase the flood of tourists from China. It has been voted for two million euro for its implementation
As it is reported in the edition, Big Ben in Chinese variant will sound as Da Ben Zhong, and Buckingham palace - "Bai Jin Han Gong" ("white, golden and amazing palace"). Additional names are about to be given not only to the architectural monuments and museums, but also to the band “The Beatles”, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, Scottish kilt, and even Loch Ness monster.
As it is written at the web-site VisitBritain, in China there is a tradition to confer to the significant subjects the names that describe them literally and show the attitude towards them.
British authorities invited Chinese users of social media to participate in the project – to offer their names with hashtag #greatnames. The authors of the most successful variants will receive a chance to be awarded with different prizes, including free-of-charge trip to Great Britain.
The results of competition will be announced in May 2015.
