Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan

On May 28 Azerbaijan celebrates national holiday dedicated to the Declaration of Independence signed in 1918.

This event marked the appearance of the first secular democratic state in the Islamic East, but it existed for not longer than two years.

From 1922 to 1991 Azerbaijan was a part of the Soviet Union, after its collapse the country revived this holiday and celebrates it at the state level.

Traditionally this day there are mass celebrations. The Azerbaijanis with their families go to the central streets where there are concerts, fairs, exhibitions and fireworks in the evening the view of which is better to be enjoyed from a cosy little restaurant while varnishing national dishes and sipping local wine.

Today Azerbaijan is successfully developing country that is promoted by oil production in the Caspian Sea, fisheries, agriculture and the sale of electricity to neighbouring states.
