Apple Day in England

Автор: 21.10.2014 | England
On the 21-st of October or in the weekends which are the nearest ones to that date, in England there is Apple Day – it is the annual event dedicated to the apples, orchards, and local places of interest and is arranged upon an initiative of charitable institution Common Ground since 1990.

Organizers regard that Apple Day is the celebration and demonstration of variety and wealth of nature, and also challenge and sign claiming that we are able to make influence on surrounding changes.

Idea of this day is that apple is a symbol of physical, cultural, and genetic diversity which should not be forgotten.

On Apple Day you may see and taste hundreds of different apples sorts; by the way, many presented kinds cannot be bought in usual shops. Employers of nursery-gardens offer to obtain rare apple sorts.

The Apple Identification Service often joins the holiday and defines what kind of apple you have taken from the garden. You may also discuss the problems connected with your garden’s apple-trees with «apple doctor».

During the holiday many apple dishes and drinks are offered – from apple pies, fruits-and-vegetables dressing «chutney» and apple jam to apple juice and cider. There are demonstrations of preparation of hot and cold dishes made with apples. Sometimes experts give the lessons of cutting-back and formation of crown, showing how to inoculate apple-trees.

Different games, apples archery, and «apples» tales are very popular at the holiday. There is the Longest Peel Competition aimed to decide what happens during cleansing of apple. The competition is held for hand cleansing as well as for the same technique with the help of machine or other engine. The longest apple peel is filled in Guinness Book of World Records. The writing about international record claims: the record of the longest undropped apple peel is made by American woman Kathy Walfer, who had been cleaning the apple for 11 hours 30 minutes, and received the peel in the length of 52 meters 51 centimeters. The record was established on the 16-th of October, 1976, in New York.
