It could seem strange, however, many trees change sex. Usually such processes happen only with the part of plant’s coma. In the case of Fortingall Yew several branches from the area of the outer coma changed sex», as the scientist Max Colman working in Royal botanic garden of Edinburg told.
The botanists gathered berries grown on the yew and intend to investigate them in the frame of the project on European yews variety. The researchers are sure that they have the possibility to find «the children» of Fortingall Yew throughout Europe.
According to the researchers, the age of Fortingall Yew exceeds five thousand years. It means that yew long-liver is older than, for instance, Stonehenge. As the local legend states, in the shade of this yew Pontius Pilate was born.
