National festival of tree planting in India

In India annually millions of trees are planted in course of National festival of tree planting also known as Van Mahotsav. The festival had lasted for the whole week, from the 1-th to 7-th of July, and corresponds with Tree Planting Day in other countries.

The tree planting festival was established in 1950 by the Minister of agriculture and food industry Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi. That year the first events on the tree planting have been arranged. So as to emphasize its significance, the time of festival holding then has been increased up to the entire week – from the 1-st till the 7-th of July.

During the first week of July in all the states of India millions of trees are planted. Indian government expects that in course of festival every citizen of the country is to plant at least one tree. Special attention is paid to the popularization of festival among children and youth that is why they provide all the schools, colleges, and other educational establishments with free-of-charge seedlings of trees.

Besides that, on the occasion of festival the education events are organized with the purpose to inform the wide audience about the significance of trees for ecosystem, ways of their implementation by a human as well as danger of forest devastation and necessity to protect and defend forests from unapproved extraction of timber and human exploitation.
