Naming of street as dedicated to Sergei Dovlatov who had been living there in the years of emigration, became possible after the pressure group – admirers of writer's talent - presented a petition into New York City Mayor's Office. As it was clarified by one of the followers, it had been taking for 34 years so that active involvement of almost 20 000 people could name a street after Dovlatov by the official channel.

Sergei Dovlatov was a Russian writer and journalist who immigrated to USA in 1978 because of persecution of governmental authorities. Soviet magazines had refused to accept his opuses, and Dovlatov had published in the underground and emigre press. Being expelled from the Union of Soviet Journalists, in New York the writer became the chief editor of weekly newspaper. Also in USA his books were published one after one, and to the middle of 1980-s Dovlatov began working in a conspicuous magazine “The New Yorker”.
