Ninoy Aquino Day in Philippines
This day people honor memory of the murdered leader of Philipino opposition, who as well was the former senator Ninoy Aquino, the husband of Corazon Aquino who then became the president of Philippines. Ninoy Aquino struggled against the dictator Marcos that is why in this country he became famous as the hero who had suffered for democracy. His murder led to People Power Revolution; consequently, the dictator had to leave the powerful positions in 1986. In addition to that, since 2004, the date of the 21-st of August appeared at the list of national holidays to arrange the official ceremony of hero’s commemoration.
Aquino made his name as the representative of opposition; particularly, he subjected to merciless critics the activity of the president Ferdinand Marcos. From the political considerations, he was imprisoned for eight years, after the acclamation of the martial law in the country. Residing in prison, Aquino took part in the elections defending the democratic values. The continual jail placement affected Aquino’s health badly, and along with his family he had to leave USA to conduct medical treatment. In 1983, he returned to Philippines so as to participate in parliament elections again. However, upon arrival, he was shot in International airport Manila.
Concerning the national holiday, Ninoy Aquino Day was established by Republic Act 9256 signed by the president Gloria Macapagal-Aroyo in 2004 in twenty-one years after the death of hero and in eighteen years after the people’s revolution.
