On June 12 the Philippines celebrate Independence Day.
This holiday was proclaimed after the country gained its freedom from colonial rule of Spain in 1898. This fateful event was preceded by a revolution at the end of which the Spanish signed an agreement with the rebel leader Emilio Aguinaldo where they promised reforms to facilitate the life of Filipinos, but did not keep their word.
Aguinaldo was forced to flee to China, and during the Spanish -American War in 1898 he returned home and took the side of the Americans. He managed to collect 20 thousand army and Aguinaldo’s participation contributed to U.S. victory, soon the Philippines became a republic, and Aguinaldo – its president.
Interestingly, neither Spain nor the United States in 1898 recognized the independence of the Philippines. Even more, after the conclusion of the Treaty of Paris that put an end to the Spanish-American War, the islands were ceded by Spain to the United States for 20 million US dollars. It was only in1946 July 4 that the Philippines received final independence.
Until 1962 the Philippines Independence Day was celebrated on July 4 (with the U.S.). Only later date of Independence Day celebrations in the country was fixed for June 12.
