“Twelfth Night” is celebrated the day before the Navity of Christ
The name “sochelnik” (Christmas Eve) is supposed to derive from the word “sochivo” – it is special grain porridge, usually with honey and fruits. Traditionally it is required to taste “sochivo” in the evening before holiday only after liturgy, which is united with the evening one.
Tradition not to partake food until the first evening star is connected with the recollection about the star appeared in the East and announced the birth of Christ.
However, this tradition is not required by the regulations. The housefather heads the whole ritual of the feast of Sochelnik. Before the start of the bake, they read the extract from Gospel of Luke about the Birthday of Christ and offer the common family devotion. During the supper, all attendees reciprocate with obleys.
Obleys are the thin pieces of unleavened bread with figured pattern, which symbolize the body of Christ. Chipping the piece if obley, the person gifted with it says kind wished.
