At Cayman Islands the first part of genetically modified mosquitoes are set free – with the help of them authorities intend to fight with the spreading of Zika virus.

The experiment intends usage of male mosquitoes which do not bite. Their task is to transfer to females a gen which leads to death the slugs of insects before they reach the sexual maturity.

Genetically modified mosquitoes will be set free during nine months in the area considered as one of the habital of insects spreading Zika virus.

The opponents of the project confirm that experiments started without arrangement of sufficiently detailed investigation.

Earlier genetically modified mosquitoes started being set free in Brazil. It is expected that such a technology will also help to struggle against the spreading of malaria and dengue-fever.

Zika virus is spread in Latin America and the Caribbean through the mosquito’s bites or sexual contacts. The scientists regard that this infectious disease can cause microcephaly in newborn children.

Mothers who contracted the virus often have children with microcephaly and syndrome of Guillaine-Barré syndrome. According to the estimations of scientists, Zika virus endangers to two million people.
