On July 1 Canada celebrates its main national holiday – Canada Day.
Canada Day was proclaimed to honour union of all British North American colonies into a single dominion under the name of Canada pursuant to the British North America Act. That day the first colonies of British North America – Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick united into a confederation called the Dominion of Canada, thus having founded a new country.
After six other provinces one after another joined the country, by the end of the 19th century Canada acquired its modern shape. The process of final formation of the Confederation ended in 1949, when the former British dominion of Newfoundland became Canada's tenth province. Today in addition to ten provinces Canada possesses three northern territories.
Transfer of constitutional power from the United Kingdom to Canada occurred on Parliament Hill in Ottawa where Queen Elizabeth II announced a new document.
