Belgian National Day is the most important holiday in the country. Since 1890 it has been celebrated annually on July 21 to honour this significant date.
This day in 1831 after elections the royal throne was occupied by Leopold I. The new king swore allegiance to the new Belgian Constitution before the Belgian Parliament. In November 1830 there were elections to the National Congress. The Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence of Belgium and the Constitution. In February 1831 Belgium was declared a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral parliament.
Currently holidays and celebrations dedicated the National Day are held across the country. The Belgians honour much this memorable date. Most large-scale festivals, of course, take place in Brussels, among which the most striking is a grand military parade (Grand Place), which takes place at the Palace Square after traditional solemn appeal of the king of Belgium to the people. In his speech, the monarch congratulates the citizens and encourages them to unite to preserve the integrity and greatness of the state. After the parade, crowds of the Belgians and tourists fill the streets of the capital featured with music performances, dance and theater shows. Also this day many public museums and historical sites open for free, among them are the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, the Royal Museum of Art and History, and even Royal Palace and the Belgian Parliament. Traditionally the holiday it topped with a grand firework display.
