Independence Day in Moldova
In December 1991, after signing of the Belavezha Accords and the collapse of the USSR, a new state the Republic of Moldova was recognized by several dozens of countries, including the United States, Turkey, France, Germany, and then Russia, Ukraine and other countries of newly formed the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS ).
Officially Chisinau entered the CIS later. In 1992 the Republic of Moldova became the UN member, and then it joined the CSCE, the Council of Europe, the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization, WTO.
Anniversary of the independence proclamation is widely celebrated by patriotic organizations which organize a solemn prayer dedicated to the memory of victims of the War of Transnistria. In the central square of Chisinau people lay flowers to the monument to Moldovan politician of the 15th century Ștefan cel Mare who is believed to be the most outstanding public figure in the history of the Moldova, and to the Memorial of military glory.
The Grand National Assembly square features a solemn meeting devoted to the Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova. At the end of the meeting and the official part of the celebrations, Moldovans and guests enjoy various cultural, patriotic and leisure activities
