Every year on August 30 Turkey celebrates a big national holiday - Victory Day to commemorate a decisive victory over the Greek invaders and in memory of those killed in the Battle of Dumlupinar, which was the final step in the Turkish War of Independence in 1922.
Battle of Dumlupinar was the last in the Greco-Turkish war of years 1919-1922, and it was part of the Turkish War of Independence. Turkish army was led by Mustafa Kemal (1881-1938), afterwards he became a politician, the first President of the Republic of Turkey.
On August 26, 1922 Mustafa Kemal ordered to attack the enemy, and on August 3 the largest four-day battle at Dumlupinar started in the province of Kutahya, where the Turkish army defeated the Greek troops who were forced to retreat to Izmir. Turkish troops entered the town after the Greeks and set it on fire - Izmir was destroyed to the ground, civilian casualties were numberless. To the present day Greeks and Turks consider each other responsible for the terrible fire.
On October 20, 1922 a peace conference in Lausanne was held, which was attended by representatives of Great Britain, France, Italy, Turkey and other countries. The treaty signed at Lausanne secured independence of Turkey and firmly established its borders. It also regulated the exchange of population between Greece and Turkey. On Victory Day across the country, to the accompaniment of Janissary march designed to strengthen the connection to time in the public mind, there are concerts, military parades and ceremonies militarized. This day (Zafir Bairam) is also celebrated by the Turkish Cypriots.
