On May 19 Turkey celebrates Youth and Sports Day, dedicated to the first president of the Republic Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Unlike most states where the holiday has only a formal meaning, in this Muslim country the Day features mass festivities. Its history dates back to 1919 when, during the war with Greece, the president of the Republic Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in the Black Sea port of Samsun declared full mobilization against foreign intervention. The younger generation was the basis of the national movement for independence, so youngsters were given Turkey's future. From that point the Youth Day is celebrated all over the country. Istanbul streets are decorated with flags and portraits of Ataturk, also there are grand parade and a number of sport events. In the evening Taksim Square and central park host a concert with performance of Turkish pop stars and invited foreign singers.
