Scientists will try to bring odor lost in ages to the roses

Geneticists noted that stock-breeders interselected various sorts of roses basing on reception of the most aesthetically acceptable visual appearance while the pungent smell of flowers lost its peculiarities.
Scientists investigated the chain of biochemical reactions in plants which produce aromatic combinations with the help of special ferments, the so-called terpenic synthases.
The team of biologists spearheaded by Jean-Louis Magnard from the University of Lyon found out that enzyme was lacking in another rose. For their work geneticists compared products of synthesis inside the cells of two sorts – Papa Meilland and Rouge Meilland (both red hybrid tea roses). The first sort emits a strong perfume while the second one almost does not smell.
It appeared that the substance responsible for the smell geraniol is created by the enzyme RhNUDX1 on the roses petals.
Plant scientists intend to use the discovery to return the initial aromas to the roses.
