Basel carnival FASNACHT is officially recognized as non material heritage of UNESCO.
For the first time the carnival in Basel was organized in XVI century. It symbolizes the beginning of the Lent. In the greatest manner it is celebrated in Sweden gathering several thousand participants every year.
The carnival lasts for three days. The traditions of celebration remained immutable. The parade starts early in the morning, before the sunrise. The first range of processions goes to the streets, and participants hold lamps and torches. The light fades on the streets, and the parade begins in the fancy party costumes.
Basel is the city at North-West of Switzerland. The capital of German canton subdivision Basel-Stadt is the administrative center of the same-name community.
