Ugadi

The holiday of Ugadi is celebrated on the first day of the month of Chaitra according to the Hindu calendar, in the Gregorian calendar it falls every year on different dates in late March or early April. Among the Kannar and Telugu peoples, as in many other cultures, the holiday of the beginning of the New Year is associated with the arrival of spring and is celebrated greatly.

Celebration begins in the morning with prayers and ritual ablutions. One of the unchanging attributes of Ugadi is a mixture of six products, called bevu-bella or yugadi-pachadhi. Each product in the mixture has a pronounced taste, and the mixture of tastes, according to tradition, symbolizes that life is a combination of six moods (joy, sadness, fear, anger, disgust and surprise).

Ugadi is widely celebrated in some states of India, and in Mauritius, where almost half of the population confesses Hinduism, it has the status of a state holiday and is an official non-working day.
