On May 18, 1048 was born Omar Khayyam – a prominent Persian poet, philosopher, mathematician, astrologer and the author of many wise quotations.
Full name of the scholar was Ghiyath al-Din Abu al-Fatḥ Umar ibn Ibrahim al-Khayyami Nisaburi. He was born in Nishapur in Khorasan (now the Iranian province of Razavi Khorasan) in the family a tentmaker.
At an early age the boy showed remarkable ability: at age of 8 he knew the Koran by heart, he also studied mathematics, astronomy and philosophy. He brilliantly finished the course of Islamic law and received his medical education. But he was not much interested in being a doctor and after death of his parents, he went to journey. During his life, the sage lived and worked in Samarkand, Bukhara where he was the spiritual mentor of Sultan Malik Shah I, in Marv, Balkh, Nishapur.
The later life of Khayyam is scarcely known. Distinguished philosopher died on December 4, 1131.
Name of Omar Khayyam is known worldwide for his quatrains Rubaiyat. However, his role in history is not limited by that.
