Автор: 27.05.2014 | USA, history, bridge
On May 27, 1937 in San Francisco the public was amazed with one of the largest suspension bridges in the world – the Golden Gate Bridge.

The initiator of its construction was the self-proclaimed Emperor of the United States Norton I. The first 12 hours after opening, the bridge belonged to pedestrians only. The next day President Roosevelt’s signal was received from the White House and the first cars drove on the bridge.

To date, the fare for crossing the Golden Gate for cars is USD 6. Free of charge crossing of two-kilometre bridge is granted for pedestrians, ambulances, police and fire emergency vehicles. It is overcome by about hundred thousand cars a day.

The Golden Gate Bridge is also sadly notorious as a suicide spot. On average, once every two weeks someone kills himself at this point.

Thanks to its bright colour, the bridge became a real celebrity in the USA. Process of its painting is a daily procedure that never stops. Special team of 28 painters is engaged into assignment. Total expenditure on technical support of a construction is 14 million dollars a year including materials.
