Today on June 17 Icelanders celebrate the national holiday which commemorates the foundation of The Republic of Iceland.
This date is devoted to the events of 1843-1874 when the state was fighting for independence from the Danish rule. Complete freedom was conquered only in 1918, and June 17 was chosen to coincide with the birthday of the leader of the Icelandic independence movement Jón Sigurðsson.
