In Belgium a «corpse flower» has blossomed

In Belgium, a corpse flower TITAN ARUM (AMORPHOPHALLUS TITANUM) considered as one of the biggest on the planet has blossomed.

The plant received such a disconcerting name due to the emitting stench which is compared with something close to the smell of stiff or rancid fish, as the television and radio broadcasting company RTL reported.

The flower in full bloom reaches 1.9 meters in height, and its weigh compounds nearly 18 kilos. Titan Arum which is available for savoring only with the handkerchief has an outjetting yellow pistil decorating purple flower-crown. It can reach the height from one and a half to three meters.

The weight of giant plant which has blossomed only for 72 hours and once in five-ten years may reach one hundred kilos. In spite of outrageous smell, some people claim that «corpse flower» could be a carrier of the strongest boost of sexual energy, as RIA Novosti informs.

Titan Arum was revealed in 1878 at Indonesian island Sumatra the citizens of which gave such uncomplimentary name. Factitiously it could be grown only in several botanic gardens of the world. The smell emanating from the flower attracts burying beetles and flesh flies which fertilize it.
