The city of Gubbio hosts an annual feast La Festa dei Ceri dedicated to the city’s patron Saint Ubaldo.
The crowed puller of the celebration is a run with five-meter candles "ceri" bearing statues of Catholic saints St. Ubaldo, St. George and St. Anthony. The weight of each construction is about 400 kg.
Three groups of men accompanying by ringing of bells, tuning pipes and welcome cheers from crowd, carry candles through the streets down to the Basilica of St. Ubaldo. Length of their path is just over four kilometres.
Despite the fact that purpose of the march is to complete the rout as quickly as possible without falling and hesitations, the race is not a real competition, but just a tribute to the Saints. Interestingly, according to the rules, candle carriers are not allowed to overtake each other and should arrive in the order they started.
Honour to participate in the race with candles is inherited from father to son. Ends this day with the overall prayer and magnificent feast where no one remains hungry.
