Belgians Tony Verhulst and Sofie Goetghebeur are going to build the care home for elephants in French province Limousin.
According to Verhulst, for twenty years they have been taking care of animals in the zoos of Belgian Antwerp and currently want to ensure that elephants in France have decent oldness.
«In several European countries the usage of wild animals in the circus is forbidden. In Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Denmark and soon in other countries of Europe the identical measures will be assumed. That is why it is necessary to create conditions so as not to euthanize but to let them live the lees of life in security», - the protector of animal has told.
Belgian couple wants to offer harbourage up to ten elephants within the territory in square of 25 ha. In their words, in this place there are all the necessary conditions for elephants’ life – there are enough water, grass, chestnuts, and valleys. The first elephant is to be bestowed throughout the year.
Municipal authorities support the initiative of the lovers of thick-skinned animals. According to the spokesperson of city council, the elephants will attract tourists and encourage economical growth of the whole region.
Similar care homes for elephants have already been existed in America and Asia.
