Lag BaOmer is the anniversary of the death of the great sage Shimon bar Yochai (Rashbi). This day people visit Mount Meron in Israel where his grave is.
Rushbi , who lived in the second century BC, was the author of the Zohar book, the main work of the Kabbalah, that is the mystical teachings of the Torah. The righteous man commanded his disciples to celebrate his death day as a day of great joy.
So, according to the instructions, students traditionally go to the countryside accompanied by their teachers. Boys organize competitions in archery and fun relays. This tradition is dedicated to the memory of participants Bar Kochba revolt who bravely fought with the Roman oppressors for freedom of Israel.
From 2004 onwards the same day Israel marks Yom Miluim that is day of soldiers of Israel Defence Forces Reserve Service. Miluim is yearly military training gathering soldiers for about a month.
