The pedestrian area in Brussels became the biggest in Europe
Indeed, formally Brussels takes the second place on this indication giving way to Venice. However, the last one is situated on the islands where the vehicle traffic, as a general rule, is absolutely forbidden.
The pedestrian area is increased from 28 to 50 ha. Earlier it used to be concentrated mainly along the famous central square Grote Markt. A new district is located generally along the avenue Anspachllaan which earlier was trunk connecting the regions of Northern and southern central stations, as Travel.ru states.
In such a way, Brussels which before that was famous as the city for automobiles tries to tilt the accent towards pedestrians and tourists. The plan was criticized by those who are afraid of traffic jams increase in the city centre because of complete coverage of several streetways.
Due to the cross of traffic along Anspachlaan and some other streets the routes of a range of buses are changed. The innovations have not made a difference for the routes of trams. Now it is more convenient to get to the point of a new pedestrian area by taxi.
