Independence Day is a significant public holiday in Guyana. It is celebrated every year on May 26.
May 26 is the day when the country attained its independence in 1966 when the British Dominion over Guyana ended. At the time of independence proclamation, the country experienced economic growth and relative calm.
During the first years the government tried to improve relations with neighbours. Especially complicated was the situation with Venezuela which claimed the territory of the Essequibo River west bank and subsequently got it.
