Father's Day in Germany

Автор: 29.05.2014 | holiday, tradition, Germany
On May 29 all German dads celebrate their professional holiday – Father's Day.

History of the holiday goes back to the 19th century. Those days it was Ascension Day customary for young men to go through rite of initiation into manhood. Since then every year these two holidays coincide.

The religious history of the celebration is tempting to deem that traditionally the stronger sex should spend the day in the church, but it doesn’t happen. Father's Day for the German men is a kind of day-off from family, children and domestic obligations.

Each year, the heads of families meet with their colleagues and then spend time to hearts’ content. Grill parties, fishing, football tournaments and visiting beer pubs are accompanied with setting of personal records of alcohol consumption.

According to police statistics, in the course of celebration of Father's Day in Germany three times more fights happen, also there are much more accidents and disturbances than usually. Government, especially its female representatives, repeatedly expressed concern and demanded to cancel the holiday, but so far their arguments were not convincing enough and German daddies keep on doing the town.
